Germ cell tumors are derived from germ cells, reproductive cells normally occurring in the ovary and testis. Although the incidence of germ cell tumors varies with age, cases before the age of 15 are rare and a peak is seen between 20 and 39 years of age. Germ cell tumor represents about 21% of invasive cancer diagnoses and is most common cancer among males ages 20-39. Germ cell tumors of the ovary are seen to have its peak incidence in the AYA population as well, affecting women often in their early 20’s.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is rare in adolescents and young adults (AYA), but these patients have seen little improvement in survival in contrast to most other age groups. Furthermore, participation in research by AYAs is typically low. We...
Congenital tumors of the central nervous system: the MCH experience.
Pediatr Neurosurg. 2009;45(5):368-74
Authors: Shamji MF, Vassilyadi M, Lam CH, Montes JL, Farmer JP
Congenital brain tumors in the younger pediatric population are rare lesions that are histologically distinct from those in the older pediatric population. Malignant histology is common, with persistently poor outcomes despite accessible neuroimaging and evolving adjuvant therapy. There remains scant literature about the natural...
Immunotherapy for malignant melanoma--tracing Ariadne's thread through the labyrinth.
Eur J Cancer. 2009 Sep;45(13):2266-73
Authors: Grange JM, Krone B, Stanford JL
A working group (FEBIM) within the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer undertook extensive studies on the possible association of infectious diseases and the risk of malignant melanoma. These studies provided evidence that several infectious diseases and also some vaccines including the anti-tuberculosis vaccine,...
The unique characteristics of ovarian carcinogenesis in the adolescent and young adult population.
Semin Oncol. 2009 Jun;36(3):250-7
Authors: Gibbon DG, Diaz-Arrastia C
Ovarian cancer in the adolescent and young adult (AYA) population is a disease that is distinctly different with regard to risk factors, genetics, and pathology when compared to ovarian cancers occurring in older women. This article will review the theories behind ovarian carcinogenesis and attempt to elucidate why these tumors...
Clinical predictors of facial nerve outcome after translabyrinthine resection of acoustic neuromas.
Clin Invest Med. 2007;30(6):E233-9
Authors: Shamji MF, Schramm DR, Benoit BG
The translabyrinthine approach to acoustic neuroma resection offers excellent exposure for facial nerve dissection with 95% preservation of anatomic continuity. Acceptable outcome in facial asymptomatic patients is reported at 64-90%, but transient postoperative deterioration often occurs. The objective of this study was to...
Challenges in the recruitment of adolescents and young adults to cancer clinical trials.
Cancer. 2007 Dec 1;110(11):2385-93
Authors: Burke ME, Albritton K, Marina N
The adolescent and young adult (AYA) oncology population has seen inferior progress in cancer survival compared with younger children and older adults over the past 25 years. Previously, AYAs had the best survival rates due to the prevalence of highly curable diseases including Hodgkin lymphoma and germ cell tumors, yet today AYAs have...
